The East Wind editors were advocates of a culturally pluralistic society which would offer equal opportunity for all. Many of the writers, correspondents and editors had participated in Christian youth conferences where liberal Christian philosophies were espoused by guest speakers and in workshops on topics as varied as ethics to folk dancing.
East Wind had a mix of news, social commentary, poetry and artwork, plus sports and social events coverage. East Wind featured novices and had a folksier style with a focus on personal commentaries. Its tone was casual and conversational. It was intended to draw in the casual reader with interesting profiles of young Chinese Americans: a female banker, a female trapeze artist, an artist and illustrator, and others.
